Hi In Room Eight, recently, we have been competing in an amazing road trip from Bluff to Picton. Firstly we had to design a car or van to take us from place to lace. then we had to decide what route we would take. would we go to Dunedin and up the east coast, would we go inland past Mt Cook, or up the west coast and across? we had to make our choice and then plan what towns or cities we would visit. at each stop we had to find one tourist attraction to do and where we would stay the night and where we would eat. Mr Burt 'gave us' $7000 to cover our costs (NI and SI)....he is a generous man! We had to keep a log of how many kilometres we had travelled, how much we spent in petrol food accommodation and on tourist attractions each day. We had to keep a diary of what we did in each town and at the end we had to decide which of our attractions we thought was the best. In the South Island many groups voted that whale watching in Kaikoura was the best SI tourist attraction.

Over the last several weeks we have been involved in the school production, 'A Big Green Adventure'. Many of us had parts to play and those who did not get a speaking part were involved in props, costumes, lighting etc.

It was a great experience and went well on the night. We did three shows and they were fun. Some of us had to sing solos. That was a bit embarrassing at first, but we soon got used to it and in the end it was just part of the play and we enjoyed it.

Hi, Muz here. Welcome to Room 8 2010. This year there are 27 children in room 8 made up of 17 boys and 10 girls.

Term one is over (can' t believe it has gone so quickly). We have had a full on term (as usual). Last week we had an outdoor education week involving a couple of observation trails.

The one around the school was interesting in that the children found it difficult, as a first up activity, to not rush things and there by miss information as they followed the instructions. On Thursday we did a more involved one around the industrial area of Port Nelson. The children were really focussed and with great powers of observation, found the answers to all the questions. I was very proud of them all.

TITANIC

The class is really enjoying learning about the Titanic and its design, history, travels and its untimely and tragic sinking. We have been using the knowledge from the documentaries to make a postcard. We had to pretend we were on the Titanic before it sank. We did not know it was going to sink. We had to write to a friend telling them about our first day on the Titanic and what we did, discovered and thought. After that we created some posters from the 'White Star Line' advertising to take a trip on the Titanic.

This term we are doing a research study of the Titanic. We have been watching a documentary that gives us lots of facts and information. We have have found it interesting, educational and fun learning about this famous luxurious passenger liner from a century ago.

Work started on building the Titanic in 1909...100 years ago...Rose

Room 8 Egg Firing Catapults

Last week on various days we made or improved our three types of catapults. They were: The Popsicle, the Peg and the Coat-hanger. We tried out all three in the hall with jaffas, marshmallows and jellybeans (they were very tasty yum yum). On Monday room 8 brought eggs to dress up. We had various styles including : super eggs, gentle eggs (gentlemen) and wacky eggs. On Tuesday Mr Burt came into the class with some good news and some bad news. The bad news was that the popsicle, peg and coat hanger catapults were too weak to fire an egg. The good news was that the big catapults that Nina, Brad and Alexander built were perfect for firing them over the castle wall. So instead, with the small catapults, we fired fake jellybeans. Then the big catapults fired our eggs, some survived but so me splattered. Then for the PRIZES! The winners got two Crunchies the other people just got one snake. Here are some thoughts that some people said. Kayla-Awesome I really liked it.

was really fantastic with the big catapults when they fired off the eggs. Janalli - I thought that they were really awesome. Hope- Fun, creative and cool, really fun dressing up the eggs. Josh- great it was cool when some of the eggs splattered on the ground and on the castle wall. Celine- It was really funny when the eggs hit the wall. Alicia- It was really fun when we fired them. Victoria- It was really fun and cool, I liked firing the eggs. Caitlin- All of it was heaps of fun, I think when Room 8 catapulted eggs over a cardboard castle wall and they splattered everywhere. But we cleaned it all up afterwards.

During the last part of term we have been studying structures and mechanisms. Mr Burt gave us a task to do. Humpty Dumpty had fallen off the wall and as the king's chief weapons advisor we had to make a catapult to heave him back over again. First we made a catapult out of household items. These were: a milk bottle top, an ice block stick, a small wooden cube, a peg, and a large flat block of wood. Then we got our teacher, Mr Burt, to glue them together. The structure of the catapults were the flat block of wood with a peg glued on top, then we put a wooden cube on top of the peg, after that we stuck a ice block stick on top of the cube, then to finish off we glued a milk bottle top on the end of the stick. We had fun firing the marshmallows and measuring the distance. Sophie and Celine's went the furthest of 3.20 metres. The next day Nina brought a homemade catapult to school. It had big trampoline springs and big blocks of wood. We all had fun and are looking forward to the next design which is made from ice block sticks!

On Friday the 29th room 8 made pizzas!! Mr Wemyss needed to judge the taste, the ingredients and look, whoever won got a $50 voucher. Victoria and Kayla won the $50 to spend at New World supermarket.

On Friday the 29th Room 8 did pizza making!!! It was very fun. About two weeks before we made our pizzas we started planning how we were going to make them. First Mr Burt(our teacher)gave us a choice of which pizzas we could make.We could either make vegetarian pizzas or dessert pizzas.We had lots of different things on our pizzas but in the end there were only three winners. The winners got a fifty dollar voucher. The voucher was for New World. The winners got to buy back all the things they bought for their pizza and some healthy food . Here are some photos.

On Friday, the 29th of May, Room 8 made some fantastic pizzas! Most of them were delicious! We all brought our own ingredients (some of us made a bit of a mess) but in the end we all had fun.

Hi all, last Friday room eight had the privilege of presenting the first full assembly for 2009. We chose our new 'Keys for Learning as our topic. With the help of Miss Moorhouse who came up with the script we put on a mini production out lining the seven keys and our new motto 'Expanding Horizons'. Enjoy looking at our photos.

Hi. The kids have been working very hard on values and learning keys as part of their first unit, Growing as a Group. Part of this included making 'kete' or Maori baskets. A big thanks to Miss Moorhouse for her ideas and help with this. We are also working on our assembly for this coming Friday. We are first up and I am sure it will set the benchmark.... only up from here on in!! No, it will be a good show and I am sure the school will enjoy it. Please join us if you can.

Hi and Welcome to Room 8's blog for 2009.

This year Room 8 is a straight year 5 class of 27 children, girls and boys.

Summer is here and the days are generally sunny and hot. swimming is a must everyday and the school pool is in tip top condition.

We have a lot of fun things planned for the term from creating 'kete' for our values to a study on insects towards the end of term.
